Focus Magazine, the Queensland Anglican church magazine reviews children's picture book, Better Than A Superhero.

Felicity’s Favourite Hug Illustration

Now this is the stuff dreams are made of! My author friend Nola Passmore wrote on her Facebook wall…

Great to see the book “Better than a Superhero”, illustrated by Kayleen West, reviewed in Focus magazine (Magazine for the Anglican church in Southern QLD). They quoted a four-year-old called Felicity who said “I really like the pictures, especially the picture where the mum is hugging the boy because she loves him so much.” Way to go Kayleen!

It made me all gooey inside 🙂 This is the image little Felicity is speaking about…

Thank you to Focus Magazine and Kristy Schaeffer for a wonderful review!

And last but not least, for Nola Passmore, who is always supporting her fellow authors any way she can, Thanks You Sunshine for the mailing copies of the review to me and the cute owl note! I think she knows I LOVE owls 🙂

52 Week Gift Card Challenge – #18 Celestial Body

Two very different style illustrations from me this week for the 52 week illustration theme challenge: Celestial bodies.

I have been experimenting with pattern in my sketchbook and they have evolved from that. The lower illustration was evolved whilst listening to revelation on my iPad. A rather eventful book in the bible, especially when Michael and his angles fight the devil.

On a very different note, the whimsical reflection of angels going about protecting and praising makes me feel pretty happy when I look at it. I did a big whoopsy though. I drew it with a spelling error – thank goodness for Photoshop! I spelt guardian – gardian!

You will see more pattern form me. I will be launching from this idea for a picture book – fun!

So where does the “gift card” part of the challenge come in? Well, I haven’t deviated too much. In time, I will pull some of the image from the top illustration and use it for that and a surface design project.

Pencil illustration sketch for 25 week illustration challenge - Cross-hatching

Cross-hatching and a cross hatching

Cross-hatching Illustration

Cross-hatching is this weeks theme. I did use cross-hatching in my illustration; a method where you cross lines over each other however my illustration is a play on words. My cross-hatching is literally a cross hatching! Don’t ask me why I chose an elephant to sit on the egg. I think maybe because it is just as ridiculous as a cross hatching. However if you think of the Christian symbol; the cross it does represent being reborn.

A little trivia: “elephant’ was the first “big” word I mastered in kindergarten. I used to recite, “ele-ph-ant” over and over and think I was so clever; such a big girl spelling this word. I loved the way it sounded spelling it out too e-l-e-p-h-a-n-t!

Because I am not one to slow down too much and always have to be creating something, I have set myself a new challenge for 2014-gift card illustrations, experimenting as I would in a sketchbook. This will keep me fresh while working on books this year. I want to do card illustration per week.

I have chosen to use the list provided on Tania McCartney’s blog for her illustration challenge. The great thing about Tania’s challenge idea is that she has opened a Facebook page for everyone. Kids and beginner can join in the challenge and have a go. I think that is a brilliant idea and so want to support her. The list can be found here and you can join the Facebook group here. The hashtag for the challenge is #illo52weeks

The first two weeks were “egg” and “kids”. I have just finished week 3’s challenge today in advance, caravan. Quite appropriate as that is where my hubby and kids are now and why I seem to have all this time to do several illustrations this week.

Note: My personal challenge this year is to do gift card illustration each week. The official list for #illo52weeks is any kind of illustration in any media, any age etc. I am combining the two challenges.

Adoptive Father on Have a Little Faith Yarra Valley FM 99.1

I was invited for an interview by Greg Carrick, Have a Little Faith  Yarra Valley FM 99.1 to talk about Adoptive Father. Listen on  Youtube. No video (just a picture of me holding the book) but most of the entire interview.

This is a good indication on what motivated me to publish Adoptive Father, and begun the amazing journey of children’s books and happy child readers.

At the heart of LOVE is adoption for one another. It's all about the HEART!

At the heart of LOVE is adoption for one another. It’s all about the HEART!

The colourfully illustrated book Adoptive Father emphasis God’s love for us, how children can love one another in simple ways: sharing, empathy, helping others, and inclusion–and the importance of having a big heart. Each page move us closer to God and each other. Its touching message will reassure any child who has ever felt abandoned, unloved or rejected.  It will especially speak to anyone without a father, who is adopted, or has felt rejected by their carers in any way.

Adoptive Father picture book arrives in Kenya

Bigger Dreams Are Possible With Books

Years ago when I dreamed of writing and illustrating a children’s book I never dreamed it would lead me down such a fulfilling path. I can’t profess to be rolling on a bed of freshly printed millions, but I never imagine I would have the opportunity to touch the lives of such precious little children: children who have so little and bring a smile to their faces.

This month I am celebrating new horizons for my first picture book Adoptive Father as images are beginning to enter my inbox and Facebook pages. I never dreamed that children outside my western world would be reading and pouring over the images of my hands. I really feel tremendously blessed to be used in this way and it makes me teary at times.

The books we sent to Kenya in March have finally arrived. Joshua from Heaven on Earth Ministries is happily assisting me distribute the books to various schools and homes in Kenya. In this was the book will potentially reach many, many children in Kenya. He email with a very excited thank you but I thank him for all the great humanitarian work they are doing over there.

We sent a few other things including pencils. Joshua and the teacher had to restrain the temptation to draw all over the books for the photos LOL

It is only early days and already we have books in Australia, Fiji, India and South Africa. There is also talks going on for more school distribution I pray will explode internationally.

Thank you to anyone who has purchased a book or donated any shipping funds-you have helped me gift many children these book already. Adoptive Father can be purchased through the following places. Please ask your bookstore to stock it and help me further this project.
